Tooleing Around: Day 33

“REDRUM REDRUM”

365F755E-7B6B-410A-9475-02B5F852D191Breakfast station was breaking down as I was checking out, grabbed two biscuits and a coffee , fine. There was a high school football team high jinksing around in the lobby and eating area, the something Wildcats, wired for their game. Unique name.

Finished the Coen Brother audio book so skip this part if you’ve no interest. I feel I had to review this like a book of shorts stories rather than an individual work. Where some of the individual studies were excellent (Blood Simple, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink) it lost credibility as a whole when trying to push cultural relevance on the lesser movies (Intolerable Cruelty, The Lady Killers). I didn’t feel there was a lot in terms of connecting their themes, there was a lot of stretching there. The “Warning” and percentage breakdown of content approach to every chapter was painful . Is the songwriter  that wrote the ode to Donny a friend ? Did she really qualify for a chapter and the song sounded like a woeful thing. Another relevance stretch. Started great , limped to the finish.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned my sophisticated audio Bluetooth system. Grand for books, tinny for tunes. No Bluetooth in the Escalade so I bought this cheapie on Groupon. Does the trick but it has a weird light synchronization feature that glows with the beat of music. Nearly took me off the road a couple of times when it took off all disco lights of its own accord on a night drive.2BEDC1AD-9A1E-423C-AAF3-682F8019005F

A fab song triple today on New Wave: Poison Arrow – ABC ; Fade to Gray – Visage (that weird English French mix) & Broken Wings – Mister Mister.

Back in my college days 82/83 I had enough cash for one weekend in Dublin. Would it be ABC – their first tour ever or  AC/DC – Back in Black, first tour after Bonn Scott’s death, with new singer Brian Johnston? AC/DC won the day and that show, at the RDS Dublin, remains one of my favorites ever. I saw them many times after.

After trying for many years, I saw ABC in Long Island this July, for the first time, 35 years later. They still had it and still looked the part. Lexicon of Love remains an 80s Classic album.

I felt so Jack Torrence, driving the winding mountain roads through Estes Park, on the way to his new future, stoked, heading to The Stanley Hotel.

Featured as the exterior for The Overlook, in The Shining, the hotel looks exactly as this fanatic for the movie would expect. It’s grand, majestic and big. It is a National Heritage Hotel and is considered one of the most haunted hotels in the country, the have daily ghost tours.

9D7A317D-2459-462A-B067-4C4CC02DF9F1And it’s my joint favorite Stephen King novel alongside 11/22/63; The Stand and Salem Falls . And Pet Semetary petrified me when I read it. Carrie is excellent too. When he’s good he’s great.

The Stanley Hotel has an elaborate ballroom and host both a Masquerade Party and Shining Ball in October. The bar and restaurant have a classic dark wood veneer, with an interestingly textured glass counter and metal ceiling. Packed for lunch.

Three Dog Night are playing the ballroom next month too. Judging from the poster, not puppies anymore.

I spent a fortune in the gift store. Very pleased with my purchases. As I like to do, I bought one thing for another person so my conscience is eased (a postcard in this case).

The have an opening for a caretaker here. I filled out an application.

Continuing with the Stephen King theme, I drive an hour back to Boulder for a look around.  Boulder is where the good guys congregate in The Stand, baddies go to Vegas. I’ve been to both. I was told King has a home here in Boulder.

Boulder is a pristine city and bright with full autumn  colors . Though you are in the middle of a metropolis you still feel surrounded by nature. The down town is a collection of two and three story red brick building with a healthy aroma of weed tinging the fall air.

The Boulder Bookstore, on the pedestrianized downtown main drag Pearl, is the most attractive and well stocked I’ve been in . A three floor labyrinth that covers all categories with a converted ballroom for a third floor. I could have spent all day in there but limited my spending to one book.

C93689D1-2999-4732-A6E4-73D972F314A4.jpeg

There was an adorable orchestra of young girls playing on the red paved street. I didn’t recognize the piece. On peeking over a shoulder it was The Lady Gaga Hit Mix. Followed by Cripple Creek. All the classics. I kicked in a few bucks.

Popped in to get postcards and George, the owner, told me to avoid Kansas but look for the Field of Dream field. George’s framing store has done the art for The Stanley for the past 30 years. Threads!

There was a lot of activity in town; street fairs: football game; activities fair; Adventure Film Festival ; a Fall band stage; the place was vibrant .

Coffee at hopping Ozo. There’s a multitude of great looking restaurants along Pearl that look really interesting, and were packed after the game, by 6pm.

Whatever the university here is called won today so everyone’s happy in the valley.

I’m liking this Boulder place, I would definitely like to come back.

Booked in to the Westin back in Westminster, close by last nights dining spot. It’s a very nice hotel and I got a great  price and room online, checked in, showered and went to the Southwestern restaurant in-house.

4C0CAC00-EAFE-49B2-A1E2-4FA2A4F4F7B9As is my way, I started talking to Brent at the bar. He was in for a couple of days, from Boston, to see the football game , his buddy has some connection with the team  I didn’t understand.

Brent is an anesthesiologist , part of a small partnership, that outsources their skill sets. Originally from Nashville he was able to give good advise as I head south. Brent does a lot of travelling to Asia with his Singaporean girlfriend . They go to Singapore once a year and always tag on another country to visit while they are in that part of the world.

They called last call at the bar and we said goodnight.

Where to go next? Everyone says to avoid Kansas .

To quote Jack, all play and no work makes Karl a less dull boy.

Tooleing Around: Day 32

B682852B-7BCA-4098-AF29-0DD88BB942E6I’m in Colorado .

Don’t think it will be just t-shirts from now on. Getting a bit chilly as I drive east.

Headed to Deja Brew Coffed , best rated in Glenwood Springs, and had an Apple Jesus with my cappuccino , some type of muffin with baked apple, thankfully no whiskers . Nicely decorated little spot with vintage Sanka posters.

Glenwood Springs is known for its public hot springs , opened in the 1880s. It’s a pristine, medium sized town, nestled under the mountains and hills, with the White river running through.

They have an interesting looking throw back vaudeville theatre with a remarkably ugly mural on the side town center. Did Judy and Mickey always have dentures? Do people still watch vaudeville and what type of people are the viewers and performers?

On the history side, Doc Holliday is buried near this town. Watch Tombstone and the earlier, classics Gunfight at the OK Corral & My Darling Clementine  , kiddies. Stopped in at the bookstore, Bookstation, that was more magazine centric but bought one anyway, Janesville non-fiction. I spotted an interesting non-fiction, Dodge City, that I downloaded, keeping with the Cowboy theme.

Then chatted with four Irish  ladies , here for 10 days, from county Wexford. Laden with shopping bags. Stopped at Native Son, more bar than coffee shop despite google recommendation. Bad. My Black Mirror shirt sparked a conversation with Seth, we  fans tend to bond. He recommended Maniac on Netflix, sounds like my cup of tea.

Headed for Boulder.

Stopped in Vail, since it was on the way, and very glad I did. Gorgeous town, looks far more Alpine than American . They are in full fall foliage here. The town only incorporated in 1966. Yetis Grind; great name; great coffee ; great looking and great gluten free amond poppyseed cake. Of course gluten free.

Seemingly a photo with Einstein a must in Vail. Margaret and Abby , from San Antonia, performed the duties. Margaret, a professional photographer , made me pose. No problem.

Stumbled on The Gilded Spruce, a delightful little perfectly located Christmas store and spent unnecessarily again. As might be expected, Vail is an all out Holiday town, made all the more Christmasy as it has no street lights, and is completely lit up with festivities lights.

You can get a nice little two bedroom here for $1.9m. Bargain.

Vail has a real fairytale quality, one of the prettiest towns I have been in.

176 miles later I’m in Boulder, a third of the journey through torrential thunderstorms.2051530F-8A47-4904-8560-DBA9CADF84C4

I booked a great room at a great rate at The Marriot in Boulder. Unfortunately when I went to check in I discovered I booked a great room at a great rate for a week from today. Tonight the price would be triple that . The staff were super nice and arranged a refund on my non refundable booking. Big thank you, I am a moron.

Turns out it’s a college football home game for Colorado State AND parents weekend so everything is booked out. But , I got a great room in Drurys, Westminister 16 miles east.

Went to dinner at Rock Bottom, a smaller chain of microbreweries and restaurants and had a chat with Perry at the bar. He’s a pilot with United, was with Continental, 32 years between the two. He’s here on training for a few weeks, the main airline hub being Denver. This is the first of four weeks training and he’s established Rock Bottom as his local.6C8E98BB-BCB0-4BB6-905B-FE9B9560202B

Perry has 50 acres of Olive Groves at his Texas home, helps with the taxes. They are handled by a co-op so he needs to do little to manage it.

He hopes to retire to Chile in the next years, he loves South America. He’s hoping to maybe do it all on a boat , he has owned and sailed in the past. Nice retirement dream.

Each floor on the hotel has a nice laundry room, so I threw everything in. I’ve been the man in Black this trip.

Tooleing Around: Day 31

50% chance of rain went to 100%. A massive thunderstorm in Moab, but it cleared by 10.

Went to the Love Muffin for breakfast , they were out of muffins but hopping. Their roof was leaking into a bucket from the storm. Coffee and eggs and spuds, nothing to write home about. Maybe the muffins are magnificent.

Popped in to the Back Of Beyond and bought a book for someone else. Excellent Western and movie section. Matthew behind the counter was a very knowledgeable fellow movie fantic. For a young guy, he knew the classics. We agreed Annihilation was our favorite movie of 2018 todate. I recommended Under the Skin, as a good companion.

Matthew recommended Moab Roasters across the road as the best coffee in town, they claimed best in the world! It was another strange combination of clothing store and coffee shop. It was a lousy cappuccino.

The Arches National Park contains the Worlds largest concentration of sandstone  arches. That’s where I’m headed.

My spiraling Pet Shop Boys Tee, drew comment from a small group from Delaware. They’d been traveling the park for 3 days so I got a list of best things to see.

7000E615-2094-43C7-97D0-C875558CBE33Arches National Park is my new favorite and I struck gold with the day. The Rock formations here are nothing like I have seen before. There is also a magnificent smell , a Park Ranger explained that it is unique to the desert , after a big storm as we had this morning.I’m thinking a bath oil franchise – Karls Scent of The Moab, if I can just capture that Utah essence.

There was a bit of a back up getting in to the Atches National Park. It’s still prime time there, the temperature perfect for hikers. There are warning signs all over to bring lots of water, it gets in to very dangerous temperatures in the Summer.

3FB1132F-CF00-4E68-B198-06F6ACC9CDB4There are lots of spots to pull over roadside through out the expansive park, one spot more spectacular than the next .

One of the first I pulled off to was The Balancing Rock, or The Nads of Moab, as its known to the locals. Ok. Maybe not to the locals.

5B54F425-F1A8-4144-9EBC-5749131E9078Stopped at The Fiery Furnace , another prime viewing spot, colored by the excessive iron content in the stone then went in to The Devils Garden. A couple from San Francisco took my photo, so it’s otheries of me as well as selfies.A543E015-FA79-4812-9987-6965477524C9

The Devils Garden is the location of multiple trails through the canyons, of various difficulty levels. I went in about a mile and a half and went left, where the sign right said to avoid if afraid of heights.  Many of the more splendid arches are in these trails. These canyons are also the site of numerous movie location shots.

127 Hours PT. 2 – The Irish Connection.

16925D5E-2242-466E-806A-2372F620A693How did Franco know how long he was there if he couldn’t see his watch?

Five hours later as I left I happened on another magnificent trail called Park Avenue, me home address. Leaving, I felt I’d a huge amount to come back for, there’s a lot I didn’t get to.

D5C55579-1C81-4AC9-BE72-3E48FB9D5F54

I drove 15 miles along the Colorado River, deep red from the mud washed by the storm today,  to Monument Valley Movie Museum and Library, on the Red Cliffs Ranch (its an expensive winery and hotel).

A lot of the great westerns were shot in this region; any John Ford Western (a lot of my favorites); Thelma and Louise; MI2; the recent Lone Ranger; oddly the bible anthology The Greatest Story Ever Told; some of Forrest Gump (gag me) and the series Alias Smith and Jones, I loved as a kid. That’s just a few. My Mother would recognize a lot of the movies listed there  I wouldn’t.

I have an odd connection with John Wayne and John Ford. When The Quiet Man was shot in Ireland, some filmed in the small town of Cong, a friend of my grandfather drove for the cast. He collected autographs of all the stars and director , and some original photos. An autograph book that I ended up with. My fascination with film started very young.

3A84E1EF-DB9E-4CAC-B710-FFDAD70C9C18.jpegLeaving there I drove on in the general direction of Boulder, Colorado . With the mountains surrounding I was out of GPS coverage for about 40 miles. Abandoned by trchnology, I headed east, using the clear night sky and the guiding light of Canis Major to guide my way.

196 miles later I took a room in Glenwood Springs , Colorado.

Tooleing Around: Day 30

Slow off the starting block today, packed and headed in to Park City for Breakfast. Promising rain again all day. Will hit the shops on Main and buy things for myself.

The room at the Marriot was very nice but  what hotel charges $10 a night for WiFi in this day and age?

The Eggs and Bacon At Main Street Deli were basic and expensive, lame coffee.

Crossed the road to the Park City Museum. It was a silver mining town before the skiing thing took off in the 1960s. The two crossed purposes when the original ski lift in 1966 was converted into an odd little subway that ran up the mountain through the mine shaft.

The basement also housed the original town dungeon, opened in 1885, closed 1966. 11 people died in this claustrophobic little prison. It was mostly a detention center and a cooling tank for drunks, The cells were tiny, about 7  by 6 foot . Spooky.

And of course, Park City hosts the Sundance film festival, annually in January , now one of the top five film festivals in the world, with a focus on Independant film. It was originally started by Robert Redford. The historic Egyptian theater is the epicenter of the festival.

Mediocre coffee at Java Cow on Main, another odd combination of coffee, ice cream and souvenir store.

Wandered the picturesque Main Street . Park City definitely has that laid back groove that comes with lots of money, It has that priveliged Hamptons feel. There are a few people on the streets , it’s obviously a town between seasons. Its quite a feat to be more expensive than Manhattan.

Dolly’s Bookstore was another odd combination of bookstore and attached chocolatier. I bought another hardcover  titled The Piranhas. I read the authors other, Gomorrah, a few years back. That’s also the title of an excellent movie and an excellent, grueling series, dealing with the Naples mob.

Natalie, in Stoked, a far better coffee shop, gave me the run down on  Park City, She described it as being a little Disney like, lots of LA Movie peoples second homes and moneyed New Yorkers. I’m here in what’s called  Shoulder season post Summer and pre Snow.

FD974009-9227-464A-9DEB-3B53E022FAA0Natalie is planning to move to Berlin with her girlfriend, Wolfe next spring . Wolfe is an artist specializing in oil on wood block painting . She showed me a website of the art, I liked a lot of the pieces.

Natalie  has an Irish passport, so she’s all set for Europe. The grandparents were from Limerick. She described a lot the coffee customers as Poodle Ladies.  I witnessed a couple , over manicured , over exercised, sheep dressed as lamb.

Moab was strongly recommended as a destination by Natalie and the Garage Cafe there, to eat, So heading to Moab. Moab is the town adjacent to Arches National Park.

The 260 miles to Moab brought me first through the changing fall colors, then across the plains with the mountains to my left and the last stretch through red rock valleys.

Walmart has gas stations?

Checked in to the Bowden Motel, not the Plaza, but it’s two blocks from the center of Moab. A couple of German tourists were unsuccessfully trying to pay at the front desk with travelers checks. They still make those things?

I got a complaint from good friends in Zurich I wasn’t posting enough selfies. Will see what I can do.

Moab is still in season , the temperature is  perfect for hikers. The town has more of a Western feel than Park City, anc there’s s nice hum to the place, lots of outdoor dining.

Went to Zax for dinner and ate at the bar. Got in a conversation with loud Harold on my left and  louder Bob, on my right, a tattooed ex marine and a veteran of Beirut. He lives in the cab of his truck, hauling long distance for the Military. He cant haul in California because his truck gives out too much emissions. Harold avoided Vietnam and just gave me a recipe for cheese curds (he’s from Wisconsin).  Though Bob lives in the lorry, he owns a home in Leesburg, Florida. I got some good instruction on how to carve up road kill if I ever have the need, truck ploughed Moose in particular.

72FEF5C2-852B-4755-9B01-E9D0BA9DFD94Fortunately, Steve Noonan, sat down at the bar and saved me in the middle of the “Let me tell you how I got my Indian Name” story.

The improbable Indian name is “Snow Hawk” by the way. Will fill you in someday . I thought I was going to get the “Two Dogs Humping” punchline.

Steve had an interesting story to tell. He is a helicopter pilot with the Australian army, on a three year transfer , posted with the Marines in San Diego . It’s a project to gain amphibious experience from the forces here.

Steve is 29, from Brisbane. He is making the most of any free time he has, seeing as much of the country as he can and meeting as many people as he can. We had a great conversation, comparing experiences as emigrants, once Snow Hawk and Cheese Curd and his missus left the bar.

Hopefully I will catch up with Steve when he gets over to NYC.

Tooleing Around: Day 29

Today was a day of driving. 570 miles on Route 80 from Reno to Park City, Utah.B31D1E09-0147-4FBD-A3F3-6392EFB2131D

If anyone is ever thinking of taking this drive, take my advise, fly. Buttes, Buttes and more Buttes.

Not a lot to see. This was the most interesting spot crossing Nevada. Locals congregate here to party on the weekends.B464C0EC-D3B2-483D-BF09-4E3E4405C61F

About the only thing worth mention that I saw today were the Utah salt flats. I hit on them soon after crossing the Utah border.

Why would you have vultures over the urinals? I had performance anxiety at the gas station.DDDD2A70-EAD7-4461-9D2D-7CFB865C52C0

The Salt Flats are where they run the one mile land speed record efforts. It was also the place that the first transcontinental telephone line made contact. It was a very ghostly visual with the bleached flats against the stark gray incoming thunderstorm . I got to watch spectacular lighting strikes across the flats. It started pouring, so I got moving and drove through a downpour for a couple of hours. The first miles, flat and endlessly straight through the flats are other worldly.2FFBBEE8-DD7C-4393-B90F-131B8535695C

Eight hours driving and multiple gas/coffee stops later, I’m in Park City. The Main Street looks beautiful .

I did get 6 hours in to a very good audio book The Coen Brothers: This really ties the films together. The author studies each film individually  but also cross references all of their 16 movies todate as a unit.  I particularly liked his breakdown of Millers Crossing , and the double theory , that everything happens twice in the movie, with different results. Now I have to rewatch.

3BCE0165-E9FE-4B79-86F2-8D705B2E97B4My top three Coen Brother movies are ; Blood Simple; Miller’s Crossing; No Country For Old Men. But then how can I leave off Fargo or The Big Lebowski.? And I love Raising Arizona.

A great audio book if you are a Coen fan. With a chapter dedicated per movie it’s very easily digestible?

Got to Park City, parked on Main Street and managed to find The Butchers Block Chip Housd still open at 9? at the bar and had a very good halibut. Booked in to the Park City Marriot close to Main Street. The manager told me they call this time of the year Mud Season. It’s pouring here.

I’m knackered. But I think that puts the vast, empty, open spaces in my rear mirror.

Bingo. I’m definitely in Utah. Do I have any Mormon friends?

1732589C-447F-4010-9D7A-D0F685E4A595

I kept the room for a second night.
Bacon egg and cheese sandwich in a Casino Cafe, exactly as expected.
I didn’t mention, my trek , west to east across the mountains yesterday, was stunning and terrifying. I’m much happier with a mountain to my right than a valley to my right. Much better driving those roads in the dark. My bravado from the Space Needle glass floor wiped, vertigo returns. I was very glad of the masterfully positioned pull over spots on the road , as I had local pickups up my hole.
I had thought of stopping last night at Whiskeytown or Shasta Lake, just east of the mountains, but the whole area was devastated by fire, numerous homes along the road decimated.
On the excellent recommendation of two blog friends this morning, I headed for Lake Tahoe, vacation home of Michael Corleone. Lake Tahoe was an hour away .
When I stopped at the first lake viewing location, I chatted with Joe, originally a local ,and Claudia, both in from Guatamala, where they’ve been for 10 years. It was Claudia’s first time at Lake Tahoe , she had my heart in my mouth standing on the cliff edge for photos. They were nice enough to perform photographer duties for me. I stood well back from the edge. Joe highly recommended Virginia City for the mining history and mine tours.
Took a walk around Incline Village, one little town by the lake and stopped  at I.V. Lab, where the Barista created my best coffee art ever (Art photo – not food). The art was better than the cappuccino FYI.
F7716D89-CB35-482B-9AE4-BA8E5501AC70
Stopped in at The Potlatch to pick up some Christmas doodahs and souvenirs. They still write the receipts by hand, for inventory purposes, so quaint . Slow and polite/Rude and quick? The question remains. Lots of exquisite Bear themed art.
70D2F29B-C6E4-4540-B232-9696E642D945
Anywsy, all the lovely ladies recommended I drive to Emerald Bay. So I took my hand written receipt and my printed visa receipt and followed their recommended route.
The drive took me the full circumference of Lake Tahoe and to a high viewing point from where you can look down on the bay and the island within. Up top there are also hiking paths that take you further  up the mountain, with lots of cougar and bear warnings as you enter.
The lake is spectacular and the coast is peppered with some nice towns. The drive takes you in and out of Nevada and California. Definitely a place I’d return to.
After yesterday’s mega drive, and because I’m planning a push to Utah tomorrow, I took the Casino room a second night. There does not seem to be a lot to see in Nevada east of here, so next stop Park City.
Song of the day, Loose Fit – Happy Mondays. And, staying in context, for those that have never seen it, 24 Hour Party People, is one of the best music bio movies ever. If you love music and movies, you should be embarrassed if you’ve never seen it. You know who I’m talking to, my friend.
B857B3A0-0412-4118-A8DF-42BEE636BF77
Went to the Casino gym and then had a sad loser dinner at the 24 hour Grand Cafe with the other sad losers that had left their mortgages on the tables and had just enough change left for a coffee and a quarter to phone their spouse to let them know they had to leave their homes tomorrow so pack up the kids. Monday night gamblers are a depressing looking crew.
Joke – the pork chops and mash were grand and I had a fine old time tooleing around Lake Tahoe today. And, an excellent Godfather II location reference.

Time to turn left.

As my dear old Mum pointed out , yesterday was day 26. I was suffereing from damp, got saturated walking back from dinner.
Started the day with screaming kids and a bun. The breakfast space is by the swimming pool, I had a muffin with a hint of chlorine . Coffee was decent.

Shout out for my Depeche Mode t-shirt at checkout. Excellent taste from Fernandez on the front desk.
You can get a contact high driving around this Redwood region – skunk central.
I asked at Redwood National Park information where to find the biggest, oldest trees and they directed me to Lady Bird Johnston Grove, high up a rutted road. Today is sunny, cool and clear, perfect for the woods. Those ancient giant redwoods are something to behold.
I hit conversation paydirt in the forest. Once again, my Depeche Mode shirt drew comment and that started an hour long chat, trekking through the woods. Tiffany and Mackenzie , living in Las Angeles , are both in arts and media. He’s a successful composer and she’s a writer. Mackenzie had recently worked with Katherine Bigelow on a project (she’s an Oscar winning director for best film The Hurt Locker), he’s also composed for a documentary up for an Emmy. Tiffany is shopping around her series screenplay, Deadfoot. We shared a lot of the same favorite composers, Ennio Morricone & John Barry, they’d been listening to on their drive. We also swapped podcast recommendations; my Dirty John for their Slow Burn, book recommendations and a common love of Better Call Saul.42DD06BD-0EE4-490A-A504-481FB926D5E1
Leaving Redwood, I took a notion and drove 365 miles, 7 hours to Reno. It was time to turn left an head East.
Speaking of podcasts, I binged The Butterfly Effect, an examination of the wide effect of PornHub, the free internet Porn site, has had Globally. It’s produced, written and presented by Jon Ronson (The Pdychopath Test). It’s an excellent 3.5 hour listen.
I was also gleeful every time porn Star Tommy Gunn was mentioned. One of my colleagues is named Tom Gunn.
Does all of Northern California smell like a giant doobie or is it something else?
Hours of pitch dark cross state driving later I’m in Reno. I got a fab, dirt cheap room at the Grand Sierra Resort. Showered and midnight dinner at the Casino. The restaurant was playing all my Euro Trash favorites. It’s a quiet night but I must say it’s a remarkably clean hotel. I gather Casinos are the one place you can still smoke.
I talked to some dude, all dressed in black , at the bar. He said he shot a man in this very town, just to watch him die .
Not the most active date.
Hotel: $50! Best room of the trip.
Gas: $85
Dinner : $23
Forgot to provide Oregon movie and book recommendations .
Movies: One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest (and book); Animal House (though probably considered toxic these days); Drugstore Cowboy
Books: The Sisters Brothers; Sometimes a Great Notion

Tooleing Around: Day 26

I’m in California. Eureka!752B6CFE-9878-47FF-8DC0-FBAB92506D92

The best part of staying in the Coos, was leaving it.
Slept like a child, though the bathroom had a vent sounded like a 747 landing.
I liked So It Goes, for breakfast, named for a Slaughterhouse Five quote and using a Clockwork Orange theme for its logo, housing an eclectic mix of movie books, novels and local band posters. Decent cheddar scone and cappuccino and lots of local foot traffic. As always, my Escape from New York Tee was admired by an enormous bearded biker lad. That t-shirt is #1 for comments, picturing Snake Plisken with a Twin Towers backdrop . Purchased at a concert by the man himself, oddball Director John Carpenter, who composes his own scores.
That may be my cultural reference record for one paragraph.57E4919C-1472-4923-9F90-41E44DEF724A

John, the big biker dude, is the owner and gave me some advise for the road south and a souvenir pin from the coffee shop. I’m reverting my cranky negativity on the town, lovely people.

I did finish Ranger Games on Audio Book. It was an intriguing study of masculinity, duty and soldering against the backdrop of the Rangers bank robbery. The central question being why the perfect all American kid would get dragged in. I’d recommend it, though  had some quibbles .

I stopped in Bandon, as I’d read it was named by an Irishman after his home across the Atlantic. Cathy gave me a little history. The town was destroyed by fire in 1936, their museums current home was built in 1937 and housed thd fire stations , a bar, town hall , at various stages ,and now the museum. A lot of other towns burnt that very dry year too . Four died in the fire, more later from after effects from smoke inhalation. One child was born in town in the night. Cathy is a lifelong resident and active member of the historical society,
Seems I’m here for cranberry picking season. There was a creepy scabby bald eagle stuffed in 1912 in the Museum , not quite sure how it snuck in as an exhibit . Looked like Norman Bates work.3AC4B9B6-AADF-4AC4-B134-06A8FB2F4015

Hit Patades latest podcast, The Nights on Broadway edition , was one of the best to date in an excellent monthly series. Each episode takes an event in the music charts and wraps  it in history and cross connections and a healthy dollop of fan boy trivia. The research is extensive and each episode is made to the duration it should be, todays 90 minutes.

This episode centered on The Bee Gees and what the Slate writer and presenter terms their Empirical period, that moment  in an artists career they cannot put a foot wrong. Saturday Night Fever days! Don’t be dissuaded if it’s an artist you’ve no interest in, they are all excellently written and interesting.

And if you have not watched Saturday Night Fever, recently or ever, go to it. It gets better and better with age . Not many can claim a legacy like The Bee Gees. I cynically went and saw them in London’s Wembley Atena in the 1980s , they were white suited and fabulous.

The pacific coast road is indeed magnificent with lots of spots to pull over and take in the courtly rockscapes, cliffs and beaches. It had turned into a miserable Irish day so I stopped in Billings Harbor for coffee and gas. And a cranberry muffin . When in cranberry picking season…
I got a nice warm welcome at the way station from the agricultural lady, checking me fruit and veg, as I crossed the border . Why is California the only state that cares what you are carrying?
I had to stop for the odd museum boat. It looks like the misplaced ship in Close Encounters (extended version only). It was closed – Closed Encounter?BCA62D3F-3F41-4EAA-B806-4F66E8BC1E2E
I got to Redwood National Park late, so I just drove through.  Bad accident on the other side of the road, through the winding woods, the smoking car was being hauled from the trees as I passed, an ambulance , sirens ablaze , was leaving the scene.

As my Granny would say, “No day you find a giant bull is a wasted day”. I was so pleased , having skipped Fargo and Bunyan lookey here!

The two friendly Canuck ladies, taking photos of one another fondling the big blue bull balls, were nice enough to take a couple of shots for me. I offered to return the favor and photograph both of them tag team tinys testicles, but they reacted like I was some kind of bovine perv.
Of course I took a Scrote-tickling selfie.

Drove on to Eureka, checked in to Best Western, showered and headed to dinner at The Lost Coast Brewery. Struck up a long conversation with Jeremy Hernandez at the bar.
Jeremy is on two day driving trip out of San Bernardino, where he works as a helicopter medic for the fire department. An 18 year medic veteran, Jeremy got on the copters after looking for a spot for years, a job he so obviously loves.
Jeremy gets up to Boston and New York for St. Patrick’s day every year, where his FDNY colleagues provide cots and booze for all incomers.198FF9EE-007F-4A4D-8C7F-292CDC345D39
A history buff, he’s looking to hit some sites of interest in Seattle and Portland in the next few days. His girlfriend is catching up in Seattle.
Weather kept me in the car a lot today, as you can tell from todays rambling. Going back to try and see Redwood properly tomorrow.

Latte and gluten free blue cheese bacon scone and flip flops and beach shorts and Cat Stevens and Florence & The Machine on audio. The Sleepy Monk could not have been more organic; the scone was scrumptious, oven fresh and the latte perfect. I now understand  why Sleepy Monk had the only line on a quiet day, it never got smaller .

Ok, it got more organic, Neil Young , Harvest Moon, just came on.
I took a long walk along Cannon Beach to see it properly in daylight, there was a light mish, still hanging over the morning. Definitely the most spectacular beach I’ve been on. This is a town I would come back  to.
Not a single person in the water.Chickens.
Rita and Maureen O Keefe were good enough to take some non selfies for me on the beach. Here out of Portland they come to Cannon Beach every year around this time, when the temperature is good and there are less tourists. They consider Cannon Beach their spot . Together many years they met working together in the OR. They are avid photographers, and planning to visit and shoot Ireland soon. Their feel is that the mountains represent the weather and cultural divide this side of the country.
Cannon Beach is one of my favorites landing spots to date. Given the choice it’s always the ocean and beach for me when it comes to scenery. It was nice to shake sand from my shoes.

Heading south on 101.

Then discovered, as I was driving away, I had missed most of the town. I found Parking and went exploring. Dropped by the Cannon Beach Book Company, a welcoming medium sized store with that Beach town feel. The well read owner gave me the perfect quote about the obsession of readers with buying excessive  books. I can’t remember what it is.
Then Insomnia for Cappuccino (also the title of my second favorite Faithless song) and a cheddar bacon scone.  Lunch.  What is happening to me?
The staff had that East Village NYC feel, just cleaner.
Great music Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Chris Isaac cover, Zepplin, Eminem ……FE15867E-BECD-4EFC-A8D3-807ABC504DD5
This is how I like my seaside towns , much more Montauk than AC.
The road out took me along Sunset Boulevard – another movie reference. Score!

Following in the vein of my heroes Wallace & Gromit, I love All Things Cheese. With that I was excited to hear of the Tillamook Creamery, a major Oregonian dairy tourist attraction, along scenic route 101 South.
It smells like cowshit in the carpark.
Begun in 1909, by a number of small creameries, to ensure quality, the group has expanded over 100 plus years and multiple family generations into the hugely successful co-op it is today. This visitor center opened in 2018, I’d no idea cheese was so popular with tourists, the large carpark was at capacity, there had to be a couple of thousand visitors . The whole operation remains farmer owned.

As well as the usual exhibits and dairy based food halls, on display  is the full, functioning cheese manufacturing process – milk through wrapping, meticulously laid out.
The cheeses were fine, and I’d put them on a burger. I wouldn’t be serving them at a cocktail gathering though.
There is a lot of food here and a lot of people waiting for it , some torn between the draw of free curd samples and the not free ice cream stand. Ice cream seemed to be winning.
I will say again, I bought the tuxedo I got married in faster than these people choose an ice cream flavor. Ice cream tourists like to read every one of the 50 listed flavors out loud before they pick. Some even call friend from the ice cream line and list them and describe every flavor they have ever tried. Some look like they have tried every flavor , today . I bet they sell punch cards.
I don’t do well in lines .
Damn good ice cream , Mountain Huckleberry. Action photo, not food,

It was to be my first dairy based gift store and I was unreasonably excited at the prospect. I was not disappointed and I did reel myself in. Bought more rubbish for my office.

Most of the cheeses sold here are produced locally save some from the sister co-op in Israel. They can be found in the “Cheeses of Nazareth” section.

I’d like to thank my brother for Dad Joke #73
I’ve now covered corn and cheese on the trip.
All in all, the Museum was a mooving experience (#74)
Started down 101 along the Pacific Coast and kept driving to Coos Bay. I was originally aiming for Newport then Florence, it did not look like a Florence, so I kept going. I did catch some good views on the route, but I’m thinking I missed a lot in the dark on those hairpin mountain roads .
210 miles later, dinner at Walters Pourhouse in what appears to be an industrial park by the docks. Lovely, It’s hopping and is still serving food at 10:30. They are playing great reggae and Bob Marleys spirit scents the air. Looks like another state that allows one armed bandits in the pubs. Sticking with the cheese theme, I ordered a grilled cheese and anyway, the tofu burger was sold out. I’ve not had cheese this good since my curds last visit to Wisconsin. ABB3175C-6B51-4E15-BABD-9E7AE9967DE9
I learned who the Hamm Bear and Oregon State Beaver are, from Bob at the bar, who recently had to move here because his girlfriend got in trouble in Denver. I didn’t push for details.
Heading for Redwood tomorrow. Today was a lot more driving than I’d planned , but if did get me closer to California.
Not hanging in the Coos longer than I need .

Tooleing Around: Day 24

I woke up to the sound of gulls and the throb of boat engines and the best view I’ve had from any room on this trip. I sat out on my front porch for a bit and took it all in. From my corner I could see the full expanse of the harbor, filled with small fishing boats, and rod fishermen along the jetty’s .
It’s such a peaceful spot, they type of town you might live in if you were hiding out from the mob. Then, next thing you know, Paula  Walnuts charters a boat with the crew from NJ and havoc ensues.
To quote The Clash , should I stay or should I go?
On everybody’s recommendation, everybody being the amazingly friendly and helpful receptionist at the motel, I went to Blue Boy Breakfast for Breakfast, famous for their Dungess Crab Omelet. One of my few rules , no bottom feeders for breakfast. Skipping the crustacean I went with eggs, crispy bacon and hash browns and that unnecessary decorative orange slice.
Blue Boy had exactly the type of atmosphere fishing town cliches would lead me to expect – low key, local and large portions, Church like in its conversation tone, only missing a boisterous Quint style character in dungarees. The silence only broken by the gentle iced tea straw slurping of a not inconsequential lady across the room. And she emptied it,  and she got another.
The only other customer is checking in on her birds with her bird sitter. She’s never left them alone for 5 days before and is worried they might go off their seed.

I took a walk up the viewing tower, known locally as The Space Needle of Westport, on my way back to the motel.9571D66D-80D2-40DB-9492-F26EA44E255F

Checked out and took a walk around the jetty’s and piers of Gray Harbor and watched a couple of commercial vessels unload. It seems to be a crab town.
Court Ship, get it? Court Ship.

Some equipment fell off the Coast Guards boat as they were pulling out of the harbor, orange things. There was a lot of distant yelling and they turned around and collected it.
Seemingly there are a lot of feral cats in these beach rocks need feeding, per signage. Odd.
Westport was similar in a lot of ways to Galway, another fishing port on a Bay. I did spot sea lion in the harbor, not something I’d see back in Ireland.
One of the fisherman caught a 7lb salmon as I passed. Salmon we would see in Galway.

Back in my very early days we used to buy salmon from Jimmy McDonagh , a local alcoholic and poacher. Stolen Salmon, from an English owned river, boiled  in water and vinegar, served with chips, still a favorite of mine.
Jimmy Mc was found dead, relatively young, kneeling beside his bed. The neighbors liked to think he went to his maker as he said his good night prayers. Whatever.

Bottom line, no more salmon. Fish cakes or fried eggs and mash, with HP sauce,  on Friday’s, from then on in. Still my brothers favorite.

Chatted a bit to Harold and Maude, out of Oregon, fishing on the pier. They recommended I drive highway 101 along the Oregon Coast , and hit all the little towns. They’d spent five days driving it. They talked up the virtues of refundable bottles and gas stations with pump jockeys and zero sales tax. Oregon bound.
Penny at the office gave me some more recommendations. Astoria starts the drive on 101. Seaside is a nice town and Red Woods in California.  Penny is a west coast child, living in Westport since 1977, originally out of Seattle. We talked concerts (Foo Fighters Shirt). She wanted to go to Woodstock back in the day, but she’d have had to run away. Still never been to New York.CA807215-E908-42C7-8432-59FEAF95CB61
Two plus hours south on 101 that were pleasant not spectacular, not butte ugly. The dramatic Megler span bridge across the Columbus river marked my border crossing  to Oregon.
I stopped in Seaside to grab a coffee to see if was worth staying the night.

Exhuberent Anna, in Columbia River Coffee, was a pot full of local information and recommendations . Seaside is the town Oregonians come to escape the heat. I got a little history of the 50+ year old Megler bridge I’d crossed . At an impressive 4.1 miles it was the longest continuous truss bridge in the world when build. Anna describec the strange underwater barn remnant in the river, where fishermen hitched their horses during low tides, back in the day, while they fished. That I need to confirm.
An odd , insistent woman, with an inch thick of lipstick, came in with a yapping ratty dog , bought a bagel and fed it to the irritating mongrel on the coffee shop floor. Another “service animal” . Aren’t  they all. That was the end of my Anna conversation.
5BFD1CEA-EC5F-419B-A39F-86AC7680A1FF
I took a walk along the promenade . This town was the end of the trail for those other two famous explorers, Lewis and Clarke.
37D2C218-31C3-4C90-82C3-4D3630C206BB
Seaside has that Atlantic City vibe, look and feel, similar citizenry and tourists, lots of kids and older people in motorized wheel chairs. I did find a good local bookstore called Beach Books and bought one called Sourdough.
Good coffee. Moving on.
On Anna’s recommendation I drove 20 minutes to Cannon Beach. It’s a radiant little town and obviously not one short of a few bucks and, Movie Bonus, the magnificent beach itself is the one featured in the closing of Point Break (the original guilty pleasure classic).CEE47513-53DE-48F2-91CD-EF94C87EA6D0
At the Pelican Brewery, I heard some other strange accents, and was well pleased to strike up a long conversation with Mark and Stephanie Stafford , over from Devon.
The fun young couple are here for their third anniversary, they had also come to the west coast for their honeymoon. They are determined to see every state in the next years and have already seen quite a few. Their honeymoon extended from a suite in the Bellagio, Las Vegas to an RV in Yellowstone.
This trip they have commandeered a yellow Chevy Camero convertible and are taking  Bumblebee from Seattle to San Francisco.C67E1151-95A5-4ACC-8F5B-1E60C3B16377
Mark is a carpenter and a large load truck driver; Stephanie works in a Devon hospital . They left their massive Rhodesian Ridgeback in Devon with a friend. The 20 months old dog is already 42 kilos. I’d never heard of this breed.
As I walked back to my hotel , Bumblebee came roaring by. Safe travels .
I did a mileage check today , I’ve driven 4,652 miles so far on this trip.
Today’s Cost:
Hotel: $125
Dinner: $22
